In 1922, a group of Nyack business and community leaders met to discuss founding a service club. They had heard of Rotary, started some 17 years earlier and rapidly spreading in the United States and Canada, with clubs even being formed in some European countries. Rotary had inspiring ideals of vocational and community service, nd was somewhat exclusive in limiting a club's membership to one leading person from ach occupation or "classification." They had also heard of the Lions, a new group of clubs that promised stiff competition to Rotary. They decided to investigate both, but ormed a preference for trying to start a Rotary club.
By December 26, 1922, Eugene F. Perry, Vice President F Gregory and Sherman, a coal and lumber company Nyack, had met with the Rotary District Governor and had received formal notice from the President and Secretary of Rotary International, confirming his appointment as Chairman of an Organizing Committee. The other members of the committee were: Dr. John L. ly, surgeon; Arthur G. Lord, undertaker; Daniel J. Shea, druggist; and Alan Leggett, insurance agent.
The leaders selected during the organizational process were elected to serve until April 30, 1924.
This was the only time in the 90 year history of the Nyack Club that a president has served for more than one year. The officers were:
President: Eugene F. Perry
Vice President: Daniel J. Shea
Secretary: William H. Radcliff
Treasurer: Robert Walmsley
Sergeant-at-Arms: George S. Writer
Directors: Arthur G. Lord,
Theodore F. Odell, Andrew S. Rosborough Charter Members of the Rotary Club of Nyack Gilbert H. Crawford Eugene F. Perry
Wilbur O. Polhemus
The application to form the Rotary Club of Nyack was approved by Rotary International on February 9 and the Club charter was delivered by District Governor Harlan H. Horner at a grand Charter Night dinner at the Hotel St. George on February 28, 1923.
